TROY — Miami County has been awarded a $20,000 Livable and Age-Friendly Communities Implementation Grant to enhance services and programs for older residents. The grant will support efforts to make Miami County more inclusive, accessible, and supportive for residents of all ages.
This project was funded by a grant from the Del Mar Healthcare Fund of The Dayton Foundation on behalf of the MVRPC Institute for Livable and Equitable Communities.
“This grant represents a step toward making Miami County a more livable and age-friendly community,” said Commissioner Ted Mercer. “By reducing barriers to transportation, social engagement, and nutrition, we are helping older adults remain active and connected.”
The funding will be used to implement key components of Miami County’s 2024–2027 AgeFriendly Action Plan, which focuses on improving quality of life for seniors. Members of the Age Friendly Advisory Council are specifically focused on enhancing transportation, social inclusion, and connectivity. Planned initiatives include:
• Free or reduced-cost rides for senior citizens through Miami County Transit.
• Free or reduced-cost memberships at local senior centers.
• No-cost holiday meals at senior centers and the Piqua YMCA.
Commissioner Wade Westfall added, “Our seniors are a vital part of Miami County, and this funding allows us to invest in programs that ensure they can live with dignity and independence. We are committed to creating a community where every resident feels valued and supported.”
The Age-Friendly Implementation Project aligns with the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities framework, which encourages communities to adopt policies and programs that support residents as they age. Miami County’s participation underscores its commitment to fostering an environment where seniors can thrive.
Commissioner Greg Simmons stated, “This initiative reflects our dedication to improving quality of life for all residents. By focusing on accessibility and inclusion, we are building a stronger, more connected Miami County for generations to come.”
