Story & Photos by Matt Bayman

Miami County—and much of Ohio—boasts some of the most breathtaking fall foliage in the world. Here at home, the Great Miami and Stillwater rivers, along with their many tributaries, create a perfect backdrop for a scenic autumn drive, hike, or even a kayaking or cycling trip. Add in an outstanding park system with miles of trails winding through woodlands, prairies, and even urban greenways, and it’s easy to plan an unforgettable fall adventure right in your own backyard.

When the colors reach their peak, the 10 locations featured in this guide highlight some of the finest foliage Miami County has to offer. The tour is also great to take during the peak of spring color in April! We’ve connected them in a 73-mile driving loop that can be enjoyed in a single, leisurely day—or broken into several shorter outings.

Our journey begins in Tipp City.

Charleston Falls Preserve
2535 Ross Rd., Tipp City

Start your hike by visiting the Golden Hexagon and outlying prairies at the park, then make your way to Cedar Pond to reflect and relax.

Kyle Park
S. 1st St., Tipp City

Hiking trails behind the dog park pass through a truly magical setting in the fall, with the color yellow displayed in all of its shades and hues. Hike back to the Great Miami River to view the vibrant riparian corridor.

Sugar Grove Road and Owens Road

Watch for the pumpkin-lined stone walls on Sugar Grove Road and then follow the only road that’s directly along a river (the Stillwater) and very beautiful—Owens Road.

F.L. Blankenship Riverside Sanctuary
4112 St. Rt. 48, Covington

Just south of Covington, this five-acre park features historic bridges and a short hiking trail next to a very serene section of the Stillwater River.

Maple Ridge Reserve & Stillwater Prairie Reserve

10430 St. Rt. 185

Trek to the upland prairies at Maple Ridge to see a truly peaceful and beautiful place. Then follow the trails to explore mushrooms and wildflowers. Finish by crossing the 170-foot suspension bridge!

Piqua Hydraulic Canal
Fountain Park, 1300 Forest Ave.

Piqua has many bright spots in the fall, but the best is probably along the Hydraulic Canal near Fountain Park, all the way to Swift Run Lake. The mirror-effect and the vibrant colors is enchanting.

Garbry Big Woods Reserve
6660 N. Casstown Sidney Rd., Piqua

One of the most secluded parks in the county, Garbry Big Woods Reserve is also one of the most amazing places to see during the fall. A highlight is the area around the pond!
