Brukner Nature Center Announces Fall Programs, Events in Troy

TROY - Brukner Nature Center is gearing up for a busy fall with programs and events for children, birders, artists and nature enthusiasts. The upcoming schedule includes opportunities to explore local wildlife, take part in hands-on nature programs, view artwork, support the center’s conservation efforts and celebrate the changing season.

 

Winter Arts & Crafts Show — Vendor applications due Sept. 7

Brukner Nature Center’s annual Winter Arts & Crafts Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. The center is accepting applications from one-of-a-kind, nature-based artisans. Vendor applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7. Entries will be juried after the deadline, with selected vendors notified by Sept. 11. Proceeds from the event benefit Brukner Nature Center’s wildlife programs. Applications are available at bruknernaturecenter.com/arts-crafts-show.

 

Young Birders’ Club — Sept. 12

Brukner’s Young Birders’ Club is designed for students in fifth through 12th grade who are BNC members and interested in birding. The next meeting is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Participants will hike the center’s trails in search of migrating warblers and other bird species using binoculars and field guides provided by BNC. For more information, contact BNC staff member Brian Ayres at brian@bruknernaturecenter.com.

 

Homeschool Nature Club — Afternoon openings available

Registration remains open for Brukner Nature Center’s Homeschool Nature Club, a drop-off program for children ages 5 to 10. The September-May program features monthly, hands-on lessons involving live wildlife and outdoor exploration. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered, but only afternoon openings remain. Registration is currently available for September through December. The cost is $5 per student per month for BNC members and $8 per student per month for nonmembers. Summer Art Exhibit — Through Sept. 27

Brukner Nature Center’s Summer Art Exhibit features the artistic quilts of self-taught textile artist Lisa Hoblit. Hoblit uses traditional quilting designs along with improvisational and organic shapes inspired by the natural world. Her recent work also includes fabric collage accented with thread painting. Twenty-five percent of each art sale is donated to support Brukner Nature Center’s wildlife conservation mission.

 

Dine to Donate — Sept. 23

Buffalo Wings & Rings, 989 E. Ash St. in Piqua, will host a Dine to Donate fundraiser benefiting Brukner Nature Center from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. A percentage of food sales will be donated to support BNC’s Wildlife Ambassadors. Customers should mention Brukner Nature Center or use code “DONATE” at checkout. The fundraiser applies to dine-in and carry-out orders.

PEEP Fall Session 2 — Registration opens Sept. 28

Registration opens Monday, Sept. 28, for the next six-week session of Brukner Nature Center’s PEEP program. The drop-off program is designed for potty-trained children ages 3 to 5 who are not attending kindergarten, including children who are being homeschooled for kindergarten. Upcoming topics include skeletons, turkeys, camouflage, squirrels and winter survival. Classes are offered Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and Thursday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Each class is limited to 12 children, with most activities taking place outdoors. The cost is $55 per child for BNC members and $75 for nonmembers. Program fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable.

 

Autumn Equinox Event — Oct. 1

Brukner Nature Center will celebrate the Autumn Equinox Thursday, Oct. 1. The event begins at 7 p.m. with homemade refreshments featuring local ingredients, followed by an exhibit of colored pencil and graphite artwork by Sharon Hester. Hester is a wildlife biologist and artist based in Lake City, Florida. She began her professional career with an internship at Brukner Nature Center and now works as a biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. At 7:15 p.m., Hester will discuss her wildlife career and artwork. Her work combines her background in wildlife biology with her lifelong interest in drawing and features detailed colored pencil and graphite depictions of wildlife. Admission to the Autumn Equinox celebration is free.
