Historic Fall Trade Fair Returns to Johnston Farm and Indian Agency on Oct. 17-18
PIQUA - The Historic Fall Trade Fair will return Oct. 17-18 to the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, offering visitors a look at daily life in Ohio from 1742 through 1862.
The two-day event will feature living historians, historical demonstrators, vendors and activities centered on the people, trades and traditions of the period.
Visitors can see demonstrations of weaving on both small and large looms, visit the farm kitchen to learn about historic recipes, and watch blacksmiths demonstrate how the trade changed over the decades. Soap makers will produce batches of soap, while oxen will be used for farm work and other chores.
Cannons will be fired throughout the weekend, and longhunters will demonstrate aspects of life on the frontier. A Victorian farming family will showcase its fall harvest, while a colonial balladeer will perform songs from earlier periods.
The event also will include children's games and activities based on those played by children at the Johnston Farm. Presentations will explore the role of women in the 18th century, and a "resurrectionist" will discuss historical burial practices and local history.
Historic artwork and other period-related items will be available from vendors, providing visitors with an opportunity to purchase historical crafts and goods.
Visitors also can take a ride on the canal aboard the General Harrison. Canal boat rides are available for an additional fee at scheduled times, so check in when you arrive.
The Historic Fall Trade Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 17 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, 9845 N. Hardin Road, Piqua.
Admission to the trade fair is FREE.
The event focuses on the history of the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency and Ohio's role in the early history of the United States.
