City of Piqua, MCD Warn About Low Head Dams on River
Information from the City of Piqua

PIQUA - The City of Piqua is partnering with the Miami Conservancy District to raise awareness about a hidden but serious river hazard: low head dams.

Though they may appear calm, low head dams create powerful circulating currents that can trap people underwater. Often referred to as “drowning machines,” these structures pose a significant risk to paddlers, anglers and anyone enjoying local waterways.

Through the Low Head Dam Safety Campaign, the Miami Conservancy District is encouraging river users to recognize the danger and take simple steps to stay safe.

If you see a smooth, unbroken line across the river, it likely indicates a dam. Visitors should never attempt to go over it. Instead, exit the river well upstream, portage around the dam and re-enter downstream, away from the turbulent backwash.

River conditions can change quickly, especially after rainfall or during high water. Officials also stress the importance of wearing a life jacket, noting that most boating fatalities involve individuals who were not wearing one.

The City of Piqua encourages residents and visitors to plan ahead and review river conditions before heading out by visiting mcdwater.org/river-safety.

In addition to raising awareness, the City of Piqua is actively working to address this hazard locally. The City is currently advancing a project to remove low head dams along the Great Miami River, improving safety while also enhancing river health and recreational access.

These removal efforts are designed to eliminate dangerous hydraulic conditions, restore natural river flow and create a safer environment for paddlers and other river users.

Residents and visitors can learn more about the project and its progress by visiting piquaoh.gov/lowdam.

By sharing this message, City officials hope to promote safe recreation and help prevent avoidable tragedies on local waterways.
