Miami County Sheriff’s Office Conducts Annual Offender Address Checks
Information from the Miami County Sheriff's Office
TROY - The Miami County Sheriff’s Office conducted its 14th consecutive annual offender address verification operation Oct. 27, checking registered sex offenders, violent offenders and arson offenders throughout the county.
The operation involved 29 law enforcement officers from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Adult Parole Authority, and the police departments of Covington, Piqua, Tipp City, West Milton and Troy. The Miami County Communications Center also assisted.
Ohio law requires registered offenders to report their residential addresses to the sheriff’s office in the county where they live, as long as they remain legally required to register. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office conducts random address checks quarterly throughout the year to help ensure compliance.
Before the Oct. 27 operation, the sheriff’s office had investigated 19 potential cases of noncompliance based on routine checks and tips from the public. Those investigations resulted in nine verified addresses and charges in six cases. Four cases were determined to be unfounded. Penalties have included probation, jail or prison time, while some cases are awaiting court appearances.
At the start of the operation, Miami County had 179 registered offenders. Officers checked all registered addresses and verified 114. The remaining addresses will be rechecked randomly through the end of the year. Investigations will be initiated and charges filed when appropriate if offenders are found to be out of compliance.
Sheriff Dave Duchak thanked the participating agencies and personnel for their assistance, noting that the operation would not be possible without their support.
