Information provided
TROY - Miami County Public Health (MCPH) is pleased to announce that, for the nineth year, the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) has awarded $46,200 in federal traffic safety grant funding for the Miami County Safe Communities Program for fiscal year 2025. This grant will allow MCPH and Miami County Safe Communities to continue to educate and increase awareness throughout the county on safe driving practices through participation in local festivals, school presentations, and other programming.

In 2023, there were 12 crash fatalities in Miami County. Data shows increased incidents of impaired driving and failure to wear a seat belt. The current seat belt usage rate in Miami County is 94%, which is a significant increase than the 2023 rate of 77.4%. Miami County Public Health and Safe Communities will focus on the continued increase in seat belt usage, impaired driving and distracted driving awareness, motorcycle safety awareness, coalition building and fatal crash data review.
The funds are passed through OTSO from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers.
Competitive grant proposals are accepted and reviewed by OTSO, with funds awarded to projects that will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal crashes or significantly improving traffic safety systems.
