DeWine Signs Bill Suspending Ohio Gas Tax for 90 Days; Here's What It Means
Information from the Office of Gov. Mike DeWine
COLUMBUS - Gov. Mike DeWine has signed legislation temporarily suspending Ohio’s state motor fuel taxes for 90 days, providing temporary relief for motorists as fuel prices remain elevated.
DeWine signed House Bill 519 on Thursday, Oct. 1. The legislation suspends Ohio’s 38.5-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax and 47-cent-per-gallon diesel tax during the 90-day period.
The measure also provides $725 million from the state’s General Revenue Fund to replace the motor fuel tax revenue normally used to support transportation infrastructure.
The legislation was approved by the Ohio House and Senate on Wednesday and includes an emergency provision. Gas stations will have a three-day period to adjust to the change.
The temporary tax reduction applies to Ohio’s state motor fuel taxes. The federal gasoline tax of 18.4 cents per gallon remains in place.
The legislation also includes provisions addressing motor vehicle theft, electronic devices and retail taxation of certain motor fuel.
The temporary suspension is intended to provide savings to Ohio motorists while maintaining funding for state and local road and transportation projects through the $725 million appropriation.
