Piqua-Caldwell Historic District to ‘Light Up the Night’ on Christmas Eve

Information provided

PIQUA — Residents of the Piqua-Caldwell Historic District are gearing up for the annual “Light Up the Night” luminaria display on Christmas Eve.

Free white paper bags are available for pickup at Elite Etc., 431 N. Main St. in Piqua. Organizers ask participants to space luminaria about 6 feet apart along sidewalks and to coordinate with neighbors when possible.

“We’re hoping to continue to add participants,” said Mike Johnson, a member of the PCHD committee.

Johnson shared several ideas for creating the displays. He and his wife use white paper bags weighted with 4-inch square ceramic tiles and place four or five small water-resistant LED lights in each bag.

Committee board president Don Smith places candles inside small mason jars, then sets the jars inside the bags for weight and added glow.

Last year, some residents filled half-gallon milk jugs with sand, anchored candles in the sand and placed the jugs inside bags, creating a soft, diffused light.
