PIQUA - Ten students from across Miami County began the 2026-27 Student United Way program with a poverty simulation and activities focused on community service and understanding the challenges local residents face.
The kickoff event was held at the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce and included presentations from six partner agencies, followed by an “Impossible Choices” poverty simulation based on local ALICE data. ALICE stands for asset limited, income constrained, employed and describes households that earn above the federal poverty level but struggle to afford basic necessities.
According to United Way of Miami County, the session received a 97% engagement rating and a 5 out of 5 feedback rating. Students said the experience would change how they think about neighbors facing difficult choices.
“You never know what others are going through so just be kind,” one student said.
Students also wrote encouraging messages for senior citizens. The messages will be shared at Piqua Compassion Network’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Student United Way is a youth leadership initiative that brings together high school students from across the county to explore nonprofit organizations, develop leadership skills and participate in community service projects. The program includes agency tours, leadership training and opportunities to collaborate with students from other school districts.
The next program activity is a tour of Youth Opportunities on Nov. 18.
