Troy Rec Announces Retirement of Longtime Program Leaders Janet Larck and Susan Thokey

TROY - After more than three decades of service, the Troy Rec will bid a fond farewell to two of its most beloved team members. Janet Larck and Susan Thokey will officially retire at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.

   In 1994, Janet and Susan launched the Troy Rec’s Before & After School Program, giving local parents a safe, welcoming place for their elementary-aged children to learn, play, and grow beyond the classroom day. The program quickly became sought after by local families.

​

   Their commitment to supporting children’s growth didn’t stop there. More than 20 years ago, Janet and Susan developed Summer Lunch Buddies, a program designed to keep kids connected, nourished, and learning during the summer months. By pairing free lunches with engaging literacy activities, Summer Lunch Buddies has helped hundreds of children maintain and strengthen their reading skills while building positive relationships with caring mentors.

 

   Building on that success, they established the Smart Start Preschool Program, creating a nurturing environment where countless children began their educational journeys. Over the years, their programs have touched the lives of thousands of Troy families, fostering friendships, curiosity, and confidence in young learners. Their legacy will continue to shine through the many families who have been touched by their work.

 

   “Janet and Susan have built something truly special,” said the Troy Rec Board of Directors. “Their legacy will continue to shape the lives of children and families for years to come.”

 

   Both the Before & After School and Smart Start Preschool programs will continue without interruption, as the Board begins the important process of finding successors who will carry forward the heart and excellence that Janet and Susan have modeled for more than 30 years.

 

   The Troy Rec extends its deepest gratitude to Janet and Susan for their extraordinary dedication and wishes them every happiness in their well-earned retirement.
