Women’s Self-Defense Program Returns to YWCA Oct. 19
Information provided
PIQUA – YWCA Piqua is proud to announce the return of the Women’s Self-Defense – Rape Aggression Defense – (RAD) program on Monday, Oct. 19.
The RAD system teaches women defense concepts and techniques against various types of assaults by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense tactics. The system of realistic defense will provide a woman with the knowledge to make and educated decision about resistance.
Thanks to a newly secured partnership with Respire Salt Spa in Troy, the RAD program will be accessible to more women. Respire owners Sandy Pennington and her daughter Amanda Fisher participated in the program 20 years ago and they feel strongly in the importance and quality of the program, as well as helping to empower other women to be able to protect themselves.
“It was important (20 years ago) to learn to keep yourself safe, and in today’s world, it’s scary out there,” Pennington said, explaining they went through the program back when Fisher was in high school. “We want ladies of all ages to know how to protect themselves, stay safe and (understand) how to not be a target. And it’s not just for young women. My mom is 84, and it worries me about her being an easy target.”
Piqua resident/YWCA Piqua Board of Directors Treasurer Cathy Oda was a student in the first RAD class held at the YWCA years ago.
“RAD made me aware of my surroundings. Whether out walking, or just to my car in the parking lot, day or night. I’m always watching people approaching me or listening for footsteps behind me. And I wouldn’t hesitate to yell or scream or make any commotion to ward off an attacker,” Oda said.
This two-week RAD program, taught by Piqua Police officers, spans over four class sessions, this time on Oct. 19, 21, 26 and 28 at the YWCA, located at 418 N. Wayne St., Piqua.
The classes, held on Mondays and Wednesdays, are from 6-9 p.m. The fee for the course is $20 for ages 21 and up, and $10 for ages 15-20. Scholarship assistance is available. YWCA membership is not required.
