Demolition of Wayne Street Buildings Funded in Piqua
Story & Photos by This Local Life
PIQUA - A downtown demolition project in Piqua is moving forward with the help of new state funding aimed at clearing blighted properties and preparing sites for redevelopment.

The project at 204 and 206 North Wayne Street is among those supported through Ohio’s Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program, part of a recent $7.3 million statewide investment announced by Gov. Mike DeWine.

In Piqua, the funding will help cover the demolition of a large, vacant structure and surrounding improvements, with the goal of readying the property for future use. Local officials have said removing deteriorated buildings is a key step in attracting new development and improving neighborhood conditions.

The Wayne Street site has already been identified for demolition, with bids solicited earlier this year for the removal of the multi-story building and related infrastructure.

Piqua’s project is part of a broader effort in Miami County, which received state support to address blight and underused properties. Records show the county’s land reutilization program is targeting several sites, including the Wayne Street property, for cleanup and redevelopment.

State officials say the demolition program is designed to help local governments remove unsafe structures while making way for economic investment. Similar grants were awarded to counties across Ohio to address long-standing vacant and dilapidated buildings.

Piqua has a history of using redevelopment initiatives to revitalize key areas. Past efforts have included major restoration and cleanup projects aimed at transforming underperforming properties into economic assets and community spaces.
