Air Quality Alert Issued for June 21–23 in Miami Valley

Information provided
MIAMI VALLEY - The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission, in conjunction with the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency, has issued an Air Quality Alert for Saturday, June 21, through Monday, June 23, for Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby counties.

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures in the mid-90s with light winds and sunny skies — conditions favorable for the formation of ground-level ozone.

The Air Quality Index is expected to reach 101 each day, a level classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” People with respiratory or cardiac conditions, older adults and children are encouraged to limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. Individuals with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and have quick-relief medication on hand. The general public is not likely to be affected, but outdoor activity should be moderated, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to help reduce air pollution, particularly on Air Quality Alert days:

  • Avoid driving if possible. Vehicle emissions account for nearly 50% of ground-level ozone. Consider carpooling, taking public transit, walking or biking for short trips.

  • Refuel vehicles in the evening. Gasoline vapors contribute to smog formation. Refueling when it’s cooler helps prevent this. Ensure your gas cap is tightly sealed.

  • Limit use of gasoline-powered equipment. Lawn mowers, chainsaws and other tools can significantly contribute to ozone pollution. A gas-powered mower running for one hour produces as much pollution as driving a car for 11 hours. Opt for battery-powered or manual equipment when possible.

  • Mow your lawn in the evening. Ozone formation is less likely when the sun is not as intense.
